Monitoring floods and waterlogging in Paragominas, Pará, using historical georeferencing data and real-time sensors (PVPG929-2024)
Identification of factors associated with flooding in Paragominas and development of a two-stage warning system using precipitation forecasts and real-time monitoring of river levels and other environmental parameters.

About the project
Monitoring flood and waterlogging events using data intelligence methods applied to historical georeferencing data and evaluation of real-time sensors in the city of Paragominas, Pará (PVPG929-2024)The municipality of Paragominas, Pará, experiences flooding, particularly during rainy periods. Rising river levels inundate urban and rural areas and sometimes interrupt transport routes used for daily travel and agricultural distribution, as well as water supplies when pipelines rupture. Reports also describe sudden rises in the Uraim River level without local rainfall, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring of these patterns to issue warnings and better manage the effects of extreme events. This project proposes identifying variables associated with flooding in Paragominas and establishing a two-stage warning system. The first stage will use publicly available precipitation forecasts to make longer-range predictions that give the relevant agencies time to mobilize. The second stage will use sensors to assess changes in river levels, precipitation, and other measurable parameters, enabling a computational environment to determine the probability of an extreme event in real time.
